Big Talk

Relationship Education to help keep children safer.

In response to our changing society and the impact of the Internet, the Government has now decided to introduce statutory Relationship Education to Primary Schools. These lessons are not new and have been delivered in good Primary Schools since the last guidance in 2000. However, some of the content has now been updated to help keep children safer.

Information for Parents & Carers of children in Primary Schools

School is here to help; we are engaging the support of the specialist organisation BigTalk Education, which is an enterprise recognised by leading national bodies and government. They work with 3 to 18 year olds and have been involved in delivering age-appropriate education of this type for over 20 years; they also deliver training for professionals, parents and carers.

Below is some information on the Growing Up Safe programme that will be delivered to the children by BigTalk Education. It reflects the recommendations of Ofsted & SEF (the National Children’s Bureau’s Sex Education Forum).

• Age 3 Nursery A fun learning environment where the children are taught the differences between boys and girls, naming body parts, correct scientific words, private areas of the body, good touches and bad touches.
• Ages 4 to 8 Re-enforces and checks what was covered in Nursery. Using specially designed child-friendly resources at the end of this session, they will be able to identify happy situations and those which may be risky.
• Ages 8 to 9 We cover different kinds of families, similarities and differences between boys and girls, the emotional and physical changes of growing up (puberty), and how babies are made and then develop in the womb.
• Ages 9 to 11 Reproduction and puberty are re-capped, including more details on how babies develop and are born. Information at this stage is vital to protect them as they move on to Secondary School and to provide an alternative to Google etc.

Big Talk Education, who is a specialist Relationship Education provider, will be delivering these sessions on Wednesday, 10th January 2024. All resources are age-appropriate and help to keep your children safe. Further information and links are available on the Brownhill website. If you have any further questions, please contact the school directly.

On the morning of the sessions, we will provide a face-to-face ‘Parents Information Drop In’ at 0840 in the school hall.

Here a Facilitator from BigTalk Education will cover in greater detail what is included in your children’s sessions and the vital role Parents and Carers can play in keeping their children safe both now and as they progress into Secondary School. Parents will be able to ask any questions they may have.

If you cannot attend the Parent Information Session, please go here https://www.bigtalkeducation.co.uk/year-by-year/ explaining who BigTalk are and what will be covered in the sessions. These videos can be accessed with the password: Happy&Safe
